A new book by WFP staff member Vichi de Marchi tells the story of Carlos, Rachel and Joe before they arrive in Sheylan...

Food Force : The Prequel

EMERGENCY IN RISTANGA

Where were Carlos, Rachel and Joe before they hit the drought-ravaged shores Sheylan for the “Food Force” adventure? Soon you’ll find out, because the main characters from the world’s first humanitarian video game now feature in a book, being presented at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy on 1 April.

“The Team: Emergency in Ristanga” is the work of Vichi De Marchi, WFP’s spokesperson for Italy and the author of a number of children’s books. In a tale of drama and action we follow our heroes on their life-saving WFP mission to flood-struck Ristanga, an imaginary country that bears the traits of innumerable real-life WFP operations. The characters we know from our computer screen come to life in the novel through their heartaches, tempers, culinary talents and pets, leaving you with a real taste of the human beings behind the humanitarian aid workers.

The book is not just “all words”, though – for every copy sold the publisher is donating 20 euro cents to WFP’s “Fill the Cup” campaign, which aims to provide meals for the 59 million kids who go to school hungry every day. It only costs 20 euro cents – one euro per week – to feed a child at school.

“Emergency in Ristanga” is being presented in Bologna in Italian, but work on other translations is already underway. Watch this space to see when it’ll be available in English!
