A very long war between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement/Army (SPLA) has killed about two million people and displaced four million. In January 2005, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement marked a turning point for South Sudan and the transitional areas.

However, a second conflict between the Government and the SPLA in the Greater Darfur region of western Sudan, which started in February 2003, goes on. The main cause of the fighting is the feeling among many Darfurians of not being included in the peace talks, especially power sharing and self-government.
