The Greater Darfur region has an estimated population of six million, it is estimated that 2 million have been affected by the violence. Over one million of these people have left their homes seeking safety from attacks. They have fled to nearby areas, including the border with the neighbouring country, Chad.
People who have fled their homes lack food and shelter; some people are already suffering from starvation. Aid agencies are trying to bring them assistance.
Food is in short supply. Things will get worse. People who have fled their land won’t be able to plant and harvest crops this year. Also, many farms have been destroyed so even if these displaced people do return home, there will still be food shortage problems.
