The Food Force setting and first two missions describe what hunger is and who is likely to suffer from it.
What is hunger?
Food Force explains hunger in the following ways:
- The setting, a hunger crisis on a fictitious island, illustrates that an entire population can lack access to food supplies and face hunger and malnutrition.
- The briefing prior to Mission 1: Air Surveillance reports that people are leaving their homes in search of food.
- The gameplay in Mission 2: Energy Pacs demonstrates some of the nutritional requirements needed to avoid hunger and malnutrition.
Who are the hungry?
Food Force identifies the hungry in the following ways:
- Sheylan is a fictional composite of elements typical of real places where hunger crises are likely to happen: It is an island community with a largely rural population.
- When the hunger crisis starts, people leave their homes seeking food (see Mission 1), becoming Internally Displaced People (IDPs), as often happens in real hunger crises.
Lesson Plans
The following lesson plans, each containing objectives, concepts and activities, were designed for international use by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization's "Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger" education programme.
Since grade levels and student ages are defined differently around the world, teachers should examine the plans, choose which level best suits their students -- primary, intermediate or secondary -- and then fine-tune their chosen plan.
